The highly loaded spoke flanges themselves are also more massive for reasons of durability.

Unlike ratchet clutches, the two pulleys of the freewheel system guarantee that all teeth are always fully in use. With ratchet freewheels, on the other hand, in the worst case only one ratchet can be engaged. This places extreme loads on the hubs and freewheel bearings. Under heavy load (e.g. steep uphill) a total failure is usually the result.
