Unlike ratchet clutches, the two pulleys of the freewheel system guarantee that all teeth are always fully in use. Both flanges have the same diameter, which adds a few grammes but has the huge added benefit of spreading the braking force more evenly across both sides. Combined with extra material around the high-stress spoke holes, the lifespan of the hubs and spokes is increased even with higher spoke tension or when under extreme loads.
