Redesigned specifically for disc brakes: the Campagnolo Shamal Ultra wheels Although disc brakes are getting increasingly popular on road bikes, many riders find themselves lacking a truly powerful wheel option. The new version of the Shamal Ultra, which has been specially redesigned for bicycles with disc brakes, is here to fill this void. The introduction of the Shamal wheelset over 20 years ago marked the beginning of a new era in cycling componentry. Today, the introduction of the disc brake in the road cycling world gives the Shamal a second chance to establish itself as the quality and performance standard for aluminum wheels – an opportunity seized with great enthusiasm by Campagnolo’s technical team. The result is the Shamal Ultra DB wheelset. At first glance, the new Shamal Ultra disc brake version seems quite familiar, as the Campagnolo engineers have done their best to maintain the characteristic aesthetics of the very popular wheels. At the same time, they have developed a disk brake specific wheel that remains true to the high performance of the previous versions. Many of the successful concepts that make the recently released Shamal Ultra for rim brake such a fantastic and reliable racing wheel have been incorporated into the new disk brake wheel design. On the other hand, great attention has been paid to every single aspect in order to adapt the Shamal Ultra DB to the unique forces, needs and performance criteria associated with disc brake technology. The Shamal Ultra wheel is entirely hand-assembled by a specialised Campagnolo technician and is checked in every tiny detail with electronic instrumentation. This ensures maximum performance and reliability for all Campagnolo wheels. The Shamal? Ultra DB 2WF uses a 22mm wide rim built to C17 standard and offers a perfect tire/rim interface for both 25 and 28mm tires. Those tires can be of either the clincher or tubeless variety thanks to the use of 2-Way Fit technology, allowing the rider to change between the two standards without the need of any additional equipment outside of the tubeless valve, included with the wheelset. This versatility is achieved by MoMag?, yet another technology that carries over from the rim-brake version, which eliminates any and all holes in the outer portion of the rim where it interfaces with the tire. Differentiated rim height makes for a front rim profile of 27mm and a rear rim of 30mm, both with rotational mass kept to a minimum thanks to the toroidal milling which leaves additional material only where it is absolutely necessary (around the nipples for reinforcement). This process keeps weight down, increases reactivity and improves handling in situations of crosswinds. Perhaps the most characteristic part of the Shamal Ultra through the years has been the unique Mega G3 spoke system. This universally lauded system has not only been maintained in the rear wheel of the disc brake version but also incorporated into the front wheel. What was once a symmetrical wheel that needed to handle symmetrical braking forces is now necessarily an asymmetric structure with asymmetric braking forces as the disc is located only on the non-drive side. 21 aluminum spokes anchored by all new black anodized self-locking nipples, for both front and rear wheels with 14 spokes on one side and 7 on the opposite have the effect of converting asymmetric force and structure into a linear and symmetric performance. A technology that offers several advantages to the structural integrity of the wheel as well as eliminating the need for rim tape. The name derives from ?Mounting Magnet? system, shortened to MoMag?.
How does it work?
The nipples, once inserted inside the rim via the valve hole, are ?guided? to the point of connection with the spoke by means of the magnet. This simple but ingenious system makes it possible to have a wheel without holes on the upper bridge, but with spokes tensioned by traditional nipples!

Campagnolo? has developed an assembly architecture which, compared with a traditional wheel, makes it possible to improve energy transfer, reduce the stress on the spokes on the right and increase transverse rigidity.This is achieved because in G3? geometry the right-hand side of the rear wheel is fitted with twice as many spokes as the left. 2-WAY FIT? is the profile which makes it possible to fit both a tubeless tire or a classic clincher. With 2-Way Fit?, Campagnolo? customers will be able to personally test which of the two solutions suits them best or use the clincher for training and the tubeless tire for the day of the race. With no doubt tubeless tires are the future of road cycling. Apart from greater comfort, the advantages are many: using a tubeless tire you can exploit the greater smoothness due to the absence of friction between the tire and the tube. There are no risks of sudden deflation when a tubeless tire is punctured, a great advantage in safety terms. The lack of tubes eliminates puncture risks. And what if the tubeless tire has a puncture?
